How to set it up

A nursery check-in sheet answers one question at 9:02 on Sunday morning: who is in this room right now, and who is coming back for each child. Set it up as one list per service with a row per room (babies, toddlers, preschool), each with its two adult spots, plus a volunteer at the check-in desk. The adults sign up ahead of time; the desk prints the sheet Sunday morning and writes each child in beside the adults who have them. Two adults per room is the rule that keeps the nursery safe, and when the count is on the row everyone can see that the 11:00 toddler room is still one short.

The mistake is keeping the volunteer rota and the check-in list in two places, so the desk doesn't know who is supposed to be in the room until someone walks in. Keep the rota on the same page you print from. One tip: add a question at signup for a cell number and print it on the sheet, so the desk can reach a room without leaving the hallway. If what you need is the monthly rotation itself, the church nursery sheet is built for that; this one is the week-to-week list.

Questions people ask

Can we print it for the desk?
Yes. Every page has a printable flyer and a printable list of who signed up, grouped by room and service, with room to write children in beside each adult. Print it Saturday night or at the desk Sunday morning.
What if a volunteer doesn't show?
They get a reminder the day before with their room and service on it, which is what cuts the no-shows. If they cancel from that email, the spot reopens on the page and the nursery lead gets a note early enough to text a sub.
Is this the same as the nursery rota?
No, this is the week-to-week list. Build the monthly schedule on the church nursery sheet in availability mode, where volunteers tick the Sundays they can do and you assign. Then extend this page a month at a time so the desk always has a current sheet.

Why not a paper sheet or a Google Form?

A paper sheet lives in one place and fills up with the first people who walk past it. A Google Form takes forty signups for a row that needed two, and you find out in the spreadsheet. An online sign-up sheet closes each row when it's covered, sends a reminder the day before, and gives every person a link to cancel so the spot reopens. See the side-by-side with Google Forms.
