How to set it up

Library volunteering is a mix of standing shifts and one-off events: shelving on Tuesday mornings every week, then a book sale weekend twice a year, then a summer reading kickoff. One sheet handles both. Keep the weekly shifts rolling and put each event in its own section with its own date.

Ask for what the desk needs at signup, like a preferred branch or whether they've had the volunteer orientation, with a required question. Volunteers never make an account; they get a confirmation, a reminder, and a cancel link that reopens the slot.

Questions people ask

Can the Friends group and library staff both manage it?
Yes. Add each other as co-organizers and you share one page and one list.
Do volunteers have to make an account?
No. Name and email. They get one confirmation with a link to change or cancel anything.
Can we require the orientation before a first shift?
Add a required checkbox or question at signup, and note the next orientation date in the page description.

Why not a paper sheet or a Google Form?

A paper sheet lives in one place and fills up with the first people who walk past it. A Google Form takes forty signups for a row that needed two, and you find out in the spreadsheet. An online sign-up sheet closes each row when it's covered, sends a reminder the day before, and gives every person a link to cancel so the spot reopens. See the side-by-side with Google Forms.
