Cleanup Day Sign Up Sheet (free, online)
Zones, crews and the truck, for a park, creek or neighborhood cleanup.
How to set it up
A cleanup day works when people know where to go. Split the area into named zones, the creek bank, the playground, the north trail, and put a crew size on each. Add the jobs that make it run: someone with a truck to haul bags to the dumpster, a check-in table with gloves and bags, a water station, and a crew leader per zone who knows where the hazards are. Then a wrap-up hour for weighing bags and taking the group photo.
The mistake is one row that says 'cleanup volunteers, 9 to 12'. Fifty people show up and stand around the parking lot waiting to be told what to do. One tip: ask people to say at signup whether they're bringing kids. Families get the playground zone; the creek bank goes to adults in boots.
Questions people ask
- How big should a zone crew be?
- Six to ten people with a leader who has walked the zone before. Bigger crews bunch up. If the zone is big, split it into two rows.
- Do we need a waiver?
- Most cities and parks want one. Online sheets can include a waiver people accept at signup, which beats a clipboard in the rain. Check with whoever owns the land.
- Can kids come?
- Usually, with an adult, on the safer zones. Ask at signup with a checkbox, 'I'm bringing kids under 12', and put families on the playground and picnic areas.
Why not a paper sheet or a Google Form?
A paper sheet lives in one place and fills up with the first people who walk past it. A Google Form takes forty signups for a row that needed two, and you find out in the spreadsheet. An online sign-up sheet closes each row when it's covered, sends a reminder the day before, and gives every person a link to cancel so the spot reopens. See the side-by-side with Google Forms.
